Lady Tigers open season with win

KINGMAN - There were plenty of base runners in the softball season opener between Tonopah Valley and Kingman Academy Friday in Tonopah. The Lady Tigers took advantage a tad bit more than Tonopah in a six-inning game called because of darkness, 15-11.

Kingman Academy (1-0) was issued 10 walks and rapped out 10 base hits, led by senior Ashlea Tomlinson. She went 5-for-5 with six runs batted in and three runs scored.

Tara Sherwood had two singles for the Lady Tigers and Alexis McDade singled and doubled.

Kingman Academy jumped out to an early 4-0 lead after one and a half innings before Tonopah (0-1) got on the board with three runs in the bottom of the second. The Phoenix scored twice in the third to take the lead from the Lady Tigers, 5-4. Kingman Academy answered with five runs each in the fourth and fifth innings and held off Tonopah's rally attempt in the fifth and sixth innings when the Phoenix scored three runs in each.

Kylie Tomlinson went the distance for Kingman Academy. She surrendered nine earned runs, walked 12 and gave up 10 hits. Tomlinson delivered 127 pitches with 58 for strikes. She struck out three to earn the win.

Kingman Academy next plays at Kingman at 3:45 p.m. Wednesday.
