KINGMAN - It's a rebuilding year for the Kingman High girls tennis team, but the Lady Bulldogs earned their first win of the season after only four matches. The Lady Bulldogs defeated Maricopa Tuesday at KHS, 7-2.
"I think it's going well," said KHS coach Laura Hilfinger about the season. "We lost a lot of big players who were seniors last year, and the younger girls are starting to step up. We're having a building year with only two seniors on the team."
Kingman (1-3) won five of the six singles matches played. Cortney McCans, Lara Iozzo, Trudy Massie, Natasha Garrison and Sacha Kessler picked up those wins for the Lady Bulldogs. In doubles, McCans and Iozzo teamed up for an 8-1 win, and Massie-Garrison won 8-3.
McCans, the Lady Bulldogs' No. 1, is undefeated in singles and doubles so far in the regular season. As one of the two seniors, McCans is excited about the season and the team.
"We have a smaller team and only two seniors, but I'm real proud of them," she said. "Hopefully, next year they will grow."
Kingman hosts Prescott (2-1) at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday.
