PHOENIX - A conservative Republican two-term state legislator from western Arizona says she is considering a possible primary challenge to U.S. Sen. John McCain in 2016.
KPNX-TV reported that state Sen. Kelli Ward said in a statement Sunday night that she's been approached by many Arizonans urging her to run for Senate. Ward said she's listening and speaking with people and that a Senate candidacy "is something under active consideration."
The Lake Havasu City physician was first elected to the Legislature in 2012. She was re-elected in November.
Republican U.S. Reps. Matt Salmon and David Schweikert also have been mentioned as potential primary challengers to McCain. He has said he probably will run for a sixth Senate term.
McCain easily defeated former Congressman J.D. Hayworth in the 2010 Republican primary.
