KINGMAN - State Sen. Kelli Ward in a statement released Saturday confirmed she is seriously considering challenging John McCain for his seat in the U.S. Senate next year.

"I haven't taken these deliberations lightly, and by no means am I out of the thinking, learning and praying stage," wrote Ward, R-Lake Havasu City.

Ward said she is encouraged by friends and other Arizonans to challenge McCain in the 2016 primary. "If I do run, I will make sure to work to keep your trust and to earn the trust of many more voters around the state," she wrote.

Ward said her supporters are discontent with Congress and McCain's "failure to stand up to an unlawful president."

Many people, she said, are upset that Washington, D.C., "is being represented in Arizona rather than Arizona being represented" in Washington, D.C.

"Arizonans are looking for a change after almost 30 years and they are looking for someone who will represent them and their interests," she wrote. "They are looking forward for someone to be their voice. Many believe I am that person."

Ward said a run for the U.S. Senate would require "tremendous contributions" from people, both in time and money.

"I don't dare make this decision without first counting the costs and exploring the political and financial paths forward for this huge endeavor."

Should she ultimately decide to challenge McCain, Ward said she would fight to stop the Affordable Health Care Act, work to secure the border before any discussion on immigration reform takes place, and support smaller government and individual liberty.

"I will run to be the voice that so many Arizonans long for from their representation in the Senate at the U.S. Capitol. I appreciate your continued prayers, comments and advice throughout this process," she wrote. "I have been traveling around the state to many different groups in order to meet my fellow citizens and to find out what they have to say about the state of affairs at all levels of government."

Ward established an email address, ElectKelliWard@gmail.com. She has a Facebook page, Kelli Ward For Arizona, and she's on Twitter @KelliWardAZ.

Ward, who represents Mohave and LaPaz counties in the state Senate, ran unopposed last November. She was first elected in 2012.
