KINGMAN - Kingman High's Desirae Gonzalez heaved the shot put short of her personal record, and as a result settled for 11th place at the Arizona Interscholastic Association Division II State Track and Field Championship Meet Wednesday at Mesa Community College.
"She missed finals by an inch," said KHS track coach Anne Bathauer. "She was nervous and very disappointed. But she is now hungry for next year."
Gonzalez's put landed at 33 feet, 8.5 inches, nearly three feet shy of the 36-3.5 she threw at the Havasu Last Chance Meet April 22 in Lake Havasu City. Had Gonzalez equaled her PR, it would have been good for fifth place.
Kellis High's Jessica Shinkle won the state championship with the first-place throw of 41-07.
Though Gonzalez is motivated for next year's shot put competition, she does compete for the D-II discus championship Saturday in Mesa. She's ranked 14th at 109-03 coming into the event. Kingman's Megan Gaul is in the high jump and Abraham Ruelas is in the boys shot put for the Bulldogs as well.
