GOLDEN VALLEY - A Golden Valley man proved to have good instincts Monday when he stumbled across what turned out to be an improvised explosive device on the side of the road.
Mohave County Sheriff's deputies responded to the area of Highway 68 and Milky Way Road just before 8:40 a.m. after a caller told dispatchers he believed he had found a pipe bomb.
Deputies secured the area and Kingman and Bullhead City bomb squads responded to the scene.
The man had picked up the device and set it down once he realized the metal pipe had caps on each end. He then walked away and called 911, said sheriff's office spokeswoman Trish Carter.
The Kingman Police bomb squad used a robot to move the pipe to a safe location, where it was destroyed at about 2:45 p.m. Carter said while it was indeed a pipe bomb, it didn't appear to "pack a lot of steam."
Milky Way Road and the second westbound lane of Highway 68 were reopened about five and a half hours after the call came in and deputies closed them down. The investigation remains open.
