KINGMAN - Applications are now being accepted for a limited number of openings in Mohave Community College's fire academy, which starts in January in Bullhead City.

Applicants must be at least 18 years old and either have proof of a diploma or a passing score on the General Education Development exam. Applicants must also be in good physical condition, pass a drug screening and background check, and meet the minimum score requirements on the college's entry testing.

An application and testing orientation will be offered at 6 p.m. Oct. 9 and 9 a.m. Oct. 10 at the Bullhead City Fire Department No. 1, 1260 Hancock Road. Applications are due by 5 p.m. Oct. 30. Applicants will undergo written and fitness examinations at 8 a.m. Nov. 7.

Once admitted, students can complete the fire academy in 22 weeks. Students must successfully complete both the emergency medical technician and fire science programs to be ready for firefighting careers.

Fire science program director Joshua Livermore said applicants should begin the process now due to the time it takes to complete some of the application requirements.

Fire science students study firefighting theories and learn how to fight fires while preparing for entry-level fire fighter positions. Certification requirements depend on the hiring agency, but the majority of regional fire departments require both an EMT and Arizona firefighter II certifications for full-time employment. Students can also choose to enhance their education by earning a driver/operator certificate, a fire officer certificate or an associate degree in fire science.

Throughout Arizona, top firefighting officials have said they expect the need for firefighters to increase to replace retirees as the economy improves.
