KINGMAN - After jumping out to a 2-0 lead after 18 minutes of action, the Kingman High girls soccer team couldn't hang on and settled for a tie in a Division IV, Section I match against Lee Williams Tuesday at KHS.
"Both teams played their hearts out," said KHS girls soccer coach Dave Kopecky. "The defense stepped up for both sides."
Delon Pease scored the first goal for Kingman (1-4-1, 0-2-1) in the sixth minute. Alea Cedillo made it 2-0 for the Lady Bulldogs 12 minutes later, but that was the last of Kingman's goals.
Lee Williams (2-5-1, 0-2-1) made it a one-goal game at halftime when Maddy Tribbett scored the first of her two goals in the 24th minute.
"Coming off a two-week layoff and playing in constant rain, the girls played their best 'team' game ever," said LWHS girls soccer coach Tom Poole. "It was wet, sloppy and both teams struggled with ball control. It was a great game by both teams, and I'm really proud of the ladies."
Tribbett made her second goal in the 41st minute, and the two teams went scoreless over the final 39 minutes. Lee Williams keeper Mia Santos had numerous saves, and Audra Coffman was credited with the Vols' defensive play of the game with a perfectly executed slide tackle when the ball was mere feet from the goal.
Kingman keeper Desi Lammers stepped up for the Lady Bulldogs with three great stops in the final minutes to preserve the tie.
Lee Williams hosted Lake Havasu (1-3) in a non-section match Wednesday. Results were not available by deadline. Kingman plays at Sedona Red Rock (1-0) at 6 p.m. Friday.
