KINGMAN - Kingman firefighters and police rushed to the Copper Ridge Apartments on Hualapai Mountain Road when a fire erupted in a second-floor unit Thursday afternoon.

The first-floor unit sustained some damage, but the flames steadily chewed through the upper apartment, blackening the walls and making its way into the space between the ceiling and the roof, where it proved difficult to extinguish.

Witnesses said the flames started on the second-floor wood balcony. Then there was a loud pop or explosion that was audible across the entire complex, and the blaze spread quickly.

Firefighters initially attacked from the ground and from the roof, then moved to a defensive posture to keep the fire from spreading. A ladder truck arrived to fight the fire from above.

The extent of the damage and the cause had not been released Thursday. No injuries were reported.
