KINGMAN - After leading Lee Williams High School to its first baseball section championship in school history this year, coach James Mayfield unexpectedly resigned Monday.
When reached for comment, Mayfield declined to discuss the reasoning behind his decision.
Lee Williams went 7-0 and captured the Division III, Section V championship. The Volunteers' 13-4 regular-season record earned them the No. 13 seed for the D-III state tournament, in which they fell to Fountain Hills in the first round.
In Lee Williams' first varsity season in 2015, the Vols went 16-8 overall and 11-3 in the regular season as an independent. Lee Williams went 18-5 overall this year, and the Vols' overall record with Mayfield coaching ends at 34-13.
