BLOG: Vote no on legal marijuana

According to the proposed voter initiative, if legalized, marijuana would have an added 15 percent tax going mainly to schools and be regulated similar to alcohol.

According to the proposed voter initiative, if legalized, marijuana would have an added 15 percent tax going mainly to schools and be regulated similar to alcohol.

August 11, 2016, the Miner had a story that legalizing marijuana in Arizona may be on the November ballot. An added 15% tax would go mainly to schools. How weird is that?

A great tragedy springs from the role in human history played by fruits and plants in our lives. When God created Adam and Eve, he gave them dominion over animals, birds, reptiles, fruit trees, seed bearing plants. We were to cultivate them and use them to feed people and livestock and to provide medicine, fragrances and certain types of shelter.

Seemed like a perfect plan and actually it was but over the years, the roles have become reversed. Instead of master of the vegetable kingdom, us humans, made in the image of God are now slaves of the products of fruit, plants and vegetables. This is an unnatural bondage which Christ can set us free from.

Pat Robertson of the CBN network, crunching the numbers, has estimated just in the U. S. alone, it is estimated 16 million Americans are slaves to fermented corn, barley, hops and grapes. Another three million are slaves to a powder taken from the coca plant. Six hundred thousand Americans are enslaved to crushed and distilled seeds of the opium poppy. Then there's slavery to fermented juices of apples, peaches and apricots.

At least fifteen million are slaves to the cannabis plant seed; marijuana or Mary Jane. And if you don't think marijuana is a crippling addiction, you have no clue. I have lived my entire life with addicts of one form or another not only near me but nearly destroying my life, whether a drinking family member or a drinker driving, leaving my one son in a four month coma and months of rehab to walk and talk again.

One day, staring at my Pall Mall cigarette of which I inhaled 40-60 a day, interspersed with coughing my lungs up, it occurred to me I was letting some tobacco leaves rule my life. I am a human with a brain letting leaves tell me what to do I considered. Even at 3AM when I would hastily dress to hit the all night Minute Market if I ran out. And marijuana is even stronger and it does do damage. To say it

doesn't is to simply evade the truth. That was the beginning of the end of my smoking 33 years ago.

If it happens, we must vote this down and pray it sticks. All too often, liberal judges step in and take the wishes of “We, the people” away, (undoubtedly illegally) such as when our Governor Jan Brewer signed the measure to block funding to Planned Parenthood clinics (May 2012) because they are the #1 abortion provider in America and they do co-mingle funds..

U. S. District Judge Neil Wake stepped in and over ruled it saying it violated the freedom of choice provision of Medicaid act. What?? The very right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness is snuffed out every time a little human life is aborted. These judges interferring with the preference of citizen voters is happening all across America.

If we let this pass we will be just like the other states that have done so. Higher crime rates on fraud and theft so the addicts can get cash to buy the dope.Higher unemployment rates since no one in the state could pass a drug test to get a job. You know the 18 year old with triple Glaucoma and a $50.00 medical card. And the high school party now with over abundance of drugs that would be legal. This is like giving a loaded gun to a murder and asking him not to shoot anyone. Our kids are already going down many wrong paths just look at the headlines everyday in this small town we live in. Murder, bodies found in back yards, bullies at school causing Suicides,Lets fix the problems we have lets not add gas to the fire. If someone needs weed for a true sickness they should buy it at the pharmacy with a prescription from a REAL doctor. beer and wine cause enough deaths everyday in this country, we don't need legal drugs doing the same thing.

I've listened to both sides of this argument and decided people will be people and will ultimately do what they want to do. If that means smoking weed or downing some beers then so be it. We learned long ago that prohibition simply doesn't work. I'm not saying we should make all drugs legal but weed is one anyone can grow and from what I've witnessed over many years; it's fairly benign compared to the harder drugs that are abused. I don't like MJ but have known many over the years who do and live normal everyday lives.

What I have a problem with is a person going to jail over a product on them that IMHO is not that different than alcohol. Like any substance; it can be abused. To fill the prisons with people who just want to relax with friends or by themselves while hurting no one in the process isn't right; again IMHO. I also think the police have better things to do than bust someone for smoking a marijuana cigarette when they aren't driving at the time.

I think it's time to give legal pot a chance. If it doesn't work out it can always be made illegal again but maybe the state will have grown addicted to the revenue by then. Just sayin'... It's just a matter of time when the feds will finally wake up and legalize it at the federal level I think. Releasing people from our jails who were busted for basic possession should also be considered; again IMHO. I also believe we need to keep pressure on the harder drugs like meth, coke, and heroin if for no other reason than as a deterrent to use them at all. Meth, in particular, does ruin lives. Seems like every month there’s a new designer drug out there from what I read. How does society keep up?

I agree with the other two subjects you mentioned Linda but I do compromise with abortion at making it illegal except for special circumstances after 3 months. I would think that would be enough time to make a decision and before the baby can feel pain. Either way it should not be paid for by taxpayers; again except for special circumstances. From what I understand; Planned Parenthood doesn't need taxpayer funds anyway. They get enough to operate via donations just like many other charities when run efficiently. Our world is already overcrowded; I don't think doing away with one way to slow that overcrowding is our best move especially in the inner cities where generational welfare is rampant. I respect the religious aspect concerning abortion but also accept life is sometimes messy. Sometimes actions, even very unpleasant actions, need to happen. Better for it to happen under good medical conditions than with someone with a coat hanger in a dark room somewhere which might end up killing the mother. That's what used to happen before Roe vs Wade. I realize this may be an unpopular stance as a conservative but I accept any criticism for it.

Freedom - There isn't a single instance recorded anywhere where someone used a coat hangar to have an abortion. Just lying crapola like blaming the KKK on Republicans when it was founded by the Democrat party. Truth is, when abortion wasn't legal, people simply had their babies. Interesting, since I was in the pro-life movement for years, it is a fact that the majority of babies were never planned - once born were greatly loved. I never planned to have my first three children ten months apart but I did - like having triplets.

Killing the unborn is certainly no way to help overcrowding on the planet but in the first place, we don't have an overcrowded planet. Someone once ran the numbers and every human on earth could have a huge piece of land with no one left out. Are there wide open spaces in America but overcrowding in Hong Kong?. But of course. People can choose to practice birth control if they want or move to less crowded areas but our planet isn't really suffering from over crowding. Another lie of the left to favor abortion.

Generational welfare could be resolved by jobs as jobs bring hope and dignity. We can thank the Democrat party of FDR for generational welfare. . I believe Trump will push jobs with everything he has in him starting with our oil and gas reserves.

There are no good medical conditions in abortion slaughterhouses. Many women die but it's always covered up. Don't you recall the Dr in PA whose clinic was rife with filth. The business of killing the unborn itself is a filthy business run by filthy people. There goal is to make big bucks, not help women in need. THAT I KNOW. Often, dead babies are found in garbage cans outside abortion mills. Ever just googled "pictures of aborted babies?" You might change your mind.

PP also pushed homosexuality - shows very young school children who wouldn't even know what it was how to perform it, etc. They are the scum of the earth and they are in our schools. Promiscuity is constantly pushed since their founder, Margaret Sanger (Hillary's hero) was a drug addict, hater of blacks and hispanics (human weeds she called them - they must be taken out) and a woman who hated large families and had many lovers, had venereal diseases herself due to her own promiscuity. Yet she is held up as someone to be venerated. She died a poor, lost drunk.

When a polemic begins with blatant falsehoods the possible credence of the remainder of the tirade is immediately suspect. There is ample evidence that, although rare, coat hangers have indeed been used by desperate women to self-abort. In the book Criminal Abortion: A Study in Medical Sociology (1969) by Bates and Zawadzki the following appears, “The drug approach having failed, the do-it-yourself operator attempts more direct methods. She may attempt inserting some pointed object such as knitting needle, umbrella rib, wire from a coat hanger, or slippery elm. Where desperation or determination results in the penetration of the uterus or the vagina infection is introduced into the pelvis and peritoneal cavity.” The basic idea is that women in the pre-Roe period who were desperate for a self-induced abortion would improvise with almost any object they had on hand not just coat hangers.”

To make an utterly ridiculous claim that, “…when abortion wasn't legal, people simply had their babies,” completely discounts the facts. A 1960 article by Mary Calderone, Illegal Abortion as a Public Health Problem published in the American Journal of Public Health posts the number of illegal abortions at an annual figure as high as 1.2 million annually. The horrifying representation of most illegal abortions prior to Roe V Wade being “back alley” practices also flies in the face of statistics quoted by Ms Calderon in the same article that cited medical experts who, “…estimated 90 percent of all illegal abortions are presently done by physicians."
A piece appearing in the Journal off Obstetrics and Gynecology in 2012 provided evidence that giving birth was a greater risk to women than obtaining a legal abortion. Birth has a mortality rate of 8.8 women per 100,000 live births, whereas undergoing a legal abortion has a mortality rate of 0.6 women per 100,000 abortions.

No rant from the ignorant would be complete without even more falsehoods, such as, “PP (Planned Parenthood) also pushed homosexuality.” We can only marvel where such trash originates, but it must be taken in context of the intellectually challenged fostering every birther conspiracy, the assertion that President Obama is a homosexual and that he “banned” the use of incandescent light bulbs.

The fealty of Trump supporters (who just a few months ago posted vitriolic comments about Trump) is disturbing in light of this comment, “…Trump will push jobs with everything he has in him….” This might be factual allowing for Trumps record of pushing American jobs off-shore. And as always with Trump the questions still remain – Why Won’t Trump release his tax returns? What is Trump hiding from the American people? To vote for Trump is, without a doubt, the greatest of example of anti-Americanism ever seen in our nation.

You mean, Dr. Mary Calderon, Planned Parenthood Director whose words we pro-lifers kept close track on? In her own words (1957 & 59), she said there were only 260 deaths from illegal abortions and most abortions were performed by Dr's (not by coat hangars). "Call them abortionists (a dirty name back then) or what you will but they are still physicians" she said, discounting the lies about 1.2 million abortions before Roe v Wade. Yes, women had their babies.

Abortions being safer than natural childbirth is another completely insane lie the pro-aborts pushed for years. Anyone w/the brain of a flea could figure that one out. A woman's body is ready for natural childbirth, the baby turns to the right position, mammary glands kick in, etc. Abortion is an unnatural act - nothing on the woman is ready for her body to give up the child. Women are often left with psychological damage at killing their own progeny, life-long depression may ensue, many women are unable to have further children they may want and some women simply bleed to death.

One mother of four bled to death during an abortion in El Paso. . The Dr lost his license and was imprisoned for some form of murder. Four children were left with no mother, the unborn baby died and the mother died. They didn't even try to get her to an ER until it was too late....afraid they would get in trouble. She was finally just thrown in a car and rushed there but too late. The murder mill was closed down. WE CELEBRATED!!

Planned Parenthood has pushed homosexuality since their inception. It is SOOOOO easy to find examples of their own words/pictures put right in our school systems. But of course, to do that simple research, you would have to admit you are wrong...therefore you don't do it and pretend the lie is the truth. Same with Obama's homosexuality. He preferred older white men...odd, huh? Numerous partners have come out and told the truth, others that knew were stunned he was running for Senator when EVERYONE knew he was gay. I'm sure you know it too and are playing the usual left wing games.

Trump won't release his taxes because the libs are waiting to pounce on any little thing to change the narrative from a failing economy, jobs, high unemployment rate for young blacks, Hillary's illegal server and her lies under oath, etc. I wouldn't release them either. Move on, nothing to see there. Hahahahaha!!! I learned that from Hillary. Anyhow, what difference does it make now anyway.

I ain't no wise tard......hahahaha! That Hillary, isn't she something with that great "black?" dialect? I know black people and NONE of them talk like that. They DO think it is hilarious however. They will be voting for Trump.

Always good to hear the hyperbolic ravings from anti-choicers when it comes to sticking their busybody noses into a woman’s personal and private decision to undergo a legal medical procedure. When it comes to people dying, why is there no outrage about the quarter of a million people who die each year because of medical errors – making it the number three killer behind heart disease and cancer? I’m sure many of those victims are parents who leaving behind spouses and children. Always remember – don’t like abortion, don’t have an abortion. In all other cases mind your own business.

The conservative/obstructionist position on Trump releasing his taxes falls short because the “story” has changed on a virtual week-by-week basis running the gamut from the “IRS won’t let me release them” (a lie quickly proven by the IRS), to “I’m under audit and cannot release them,” (another lie blown out of the water by the IRS), to “my lawyers or tax advisers, or some guy I met on the street says it’s not a good idea,” to his idiot kid claiming, “No one would be able to understand them.” What the conservative/obstructionists keep avoiding is the fact that, during the 2012, election Trump made the statement that Willard’s reluctance to release his tax returns was a “disqualifier” for Willard’s run. Can any conservative/obstructionist explain why Trump’s position on showing tax returns has done a 180? Also it should be pointed out that every presidential candidate over the past nearly fifty years has allowed the American people to see their tax returns – once again bringing up the question, what is Trump hiding from the American people?

Planned Parenthood has never “pushed” homosexuality in our schools or anywhere else. Just more hyperbolic trash designed to inflame the ignorant.

“…and her lies under oath…”. Would it be possible to have actual proof of her “lies” along with an explanation of why she has not been charged, arrested, tried, convicted and punished for those “lies.” Be specific – thank you.

“I ain't no wise tard......hahahaha!” No additional comment necessary.

One individuals failure to control their addiction to tobacco does not harbor any substantive reason for voting no on the marijuana issue. Tobacco has been legal for virtually forever and yet there are million and millions of people who have never taken a paper-wrapped weed, shoved it in their mouth and set fire to it. Such actions are truly stupid, but the weaknesses of a few do not translate to a weakness of the entire population.

Of course none of this commenters rants would ever be complete without an attack on the rights of of women to make their own personal and private medical decisions. Once again it must be emphasized, don't like abortion don't have an abortion. In all other cases mind your own business.

"" Once again it must be emphasized, don't like abortion don't have an abortion. In all other cases mind your own business.""

If we could just get the busy body left to stay out other peoples business on so many different issues like gun rights; America would be a better place.

Take your own advice lefty and just leave us alone to be free.

Always funny to hear the "gun rights" nonsense from conservative/obstructionists, but they are truly one funny and misinformed lot.

I am please to see Morrow is a supporter of a woman's right to choose her own medical decisions. Enlightenment - on even one issue - is progress.

First, killing an unborn human made in the image of God is not a private medical decision, it is murder.

Second, have you followed Colorado since their legalizing of pot? They could use John Denver's Rocky Mountain High as their theme song.

Writing for the Daily Signal, a branch of the Heritage Foundation, Cully Stimson points out the following. And he is a specialist in the field incidentally.

Just by 2014, traffic fatalities of those testing positive for marijuana went up 100%.

The majority of DUI arrests involved marijuana and 25 to 40% were marijuana alone.

In 2012, 10.47% of CO youth 12 to 17 were marijuana users compared to 7.55 % nationally, 39% higher than the national average. Really think 12 year olds who should be out having fun and enjoying Jr High should be, instead, smoking pot?

Drug related student suspension/expulsions increased 32% from 2008-09 (when first CO legalization went through) to 2012/13 when it was further legalized. Most were marijuana violations.

When kids start getting suspended at such an early age as in Jr High, it often sets the tone for what will be the rest of their school years. My youngest son was suspended in 7th grade for pot, never finished high school (got GED) and 33 years later is still an addict, leaving his trail of tears for the rest of us to wipe up. Three of his siblings, by comparison have 8 degrees between them. All of their children also have degrees and to a person, all have excellent paying jobs - are very responsible citizens.

I tell his story in hope others won't make the same mistakes.

As usual we are provided with incorrect information regarding abortion based on religious hyperbole instead of law. Abortion is a legally defined procedure in a nation that lives by laws rather than religious rhetoric designed to interfere with – in this instance – the rights of a woman to make her own personal and private decision to undergo that legal procedure. To interfere in that choice is, as stated, none of the business of those who feel they have the right to stick there busybodies noses into the private medical decision of others. Again, don’t like abortion, don’t have an abortion. In all other cases mind your own business.

Using an article written by a right wing loon in a publication by the right wing Heritage Foundation means nothing – well, actually less than nothing and claiming the writer is, “…he is a specialist in the field…” just adds to the ridiculousness of the entire thing and notice none of the “information” provided is actually current. Dating from 2008 to 2012. Actual facts dispel that trash in a heartbeat – The citizens of Colorado voted four years ago with the law taking effect three years ago (negating any of the “specialists” trash dating prior to that time) in overwhelming numbers to legalize recreational marijuana. A recent poll indicates that the citizens of Colorado say the initiative has had a positive effect on the state and do not want to change the law. 51% would oppose any attempt to repeal the law, with 36 percent in favor of repeal and 9% not caring one way or the other. Those supporting moved up to 64% when asked about the positive impact of the law on the state’s economy. Crime rates have remained virtually unchanged; children are actually using marijuana less since legalization and even drunks are not drinking as heavily.

And as usual we are treated to a “story” that has no actual bearing on the issue at hand.

What a mish-mash of unrelated junk THIS is.

The "authority" she cites on this subject is a proven con artist who claims that the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks were caused by "pagans, abortionists, feminists, gays, lesbians, and the American Civil Liberties Union", that hurricanes, earthquakes, and tornadoes are caused by America's acceptance of homosexuality, and that "feminism is a socialist, anti-family political movement that encourages women to leave their husbands, kill their children, practice witchcraft, destroy capitalism, and become lesbians". Does anyone with an IQ above 60 actually listen to this man?

She then goes on to equate drunk driving and addiction to hard drugs with marijuana use, with a hit at women's legal right to terminate a pregnancy thrown in. Right-wingers obtusely refuse to acknowledge that Planned Parenthood is the #1 organization in the country PREVENTING unwanted pregnancy (and therefore abortion), and that at least 99 percent of abortions are performed at a stage in pregnancy when the organism involved has no physiological ability to experience pain or awareness. Of course if someone can't tell the differenced between a fertilized egg and a full-fledged human being, they are unlikely to be capable of understanding much of anything else.

This issue sure is a tricky one.

On one hand there is the concern about abuse, addiction and damage to the mind and body. On the other, it would be controlled (to an extent) and it has proven to help many with chronic health issues.

My view on the subject is that anything used in excess is dangerous. The likes of sugar, caffeine, nicotine, alcohol and all of those nasty preservatives put into our food should also be questioned. None of these, however, have any medical benefits that I’m aware of.

Street drugs and alcohol appear to be the main cause in a variety of crimes; however, I have yet to hear of someone being under the influence of marijuana which caused one to: chewed off the face of his victim; start or escalate a bar fight; stagger down a street talking to someone who is not there due to the lack of sleep; become violent for no reason, and so on..

By no means do I support any illegal activity under the influence or not, but I find it hard to vote against this issue unless we prohibit all dangerous substances. This would also include pharmaceuticals that are deemed addictive.

I agree that the taxes would go to schools is weird but if the money stays in the U.S. rather than going to Mexico, Columbia, etc., then I’m all for the legalization.

Whew, ice in Death Valley as "Edith" and I agree on something. Very well stated.

1

Since you are not running for president of the United States I see no reason for you to release your tax returns. However since Donald Trump made tax returns an issue in the 2012 election the questions must be asked - Why won't Trump release his tax returns? What is Trump hiding from the American people.

It's clear by reading this one thread there's varying degrees of conservatism and how to apply the religious basics about abortions.

I'm sad to say this is one area not all of us will find a consensus even though I truly wish we could. There's just too much of a chasm between the ideas of what's right and what isn't. I purposely chose not to say what's "wrong" because there's room for debate if someone isn't 100% in the no abortion ever camp.

I really don't like this subject because of all the variables and how the left uses it to beat the right over the head with and frankly Linda; I'm sorry to say they have a point on this one issue concerning a woman's right to choose. I really am sorry but this issue is not a black and white issue; there's a lot of gray area in this equation.

We can’t always agree but it does illustrate one important thing; the leftists are drones because they never disagree with each other openly like we are right now. They are like the “Borg” from the old Star Trek Generations series which have assimilated into a collective. That’s pretty much what the left is now; a mindless collective directed by one hive mind higher up. Sad but true. Sigh.

Actual Christian who accept the words of God know it is wrong to go about being busybodies and sticking their noses into the lives of others. With that said and with abortion being a legal medical procedure the issue still comes down to - Don't like abortion. don't have an abortion. In all other cases mind your own business.

So true Edith; a tricky subject indeed and not one likely to reach a consensus because of so many pee-conceived notions about it.

Thank you HwyRover! What a woman does with HER body is HER business and HER business ONLY! And in case people haven't noticed, cannabis is being legalized more & more, and just like same sex marriage it will be fully legalized before you know it!

1

Wildrose 3 months, 3 weeks ago

Actually you're wrong. It is against the law for a woman to put cocaine, heroin, etc in her body, put too much alcohol in her body and drive a vehicle too. It is also against the law to sell your body as in prostitution.

And we aren't talking about her body here. We are talking about a separate human with his/her own heart, legs, arms, head - burnt to death or ripped apart in the womb, with not even any pain killer - often a viable human that can live alone outside the body since it is legal to have an abortion up until the last month. My first baby was born at 6 1/2 months and weighed 2 lbs. She's completed 30 years working with autistic children, is now setting up her own program.

Please google pictures of aborted babies. We don't even do what happens to them to animals.

Yesterday the news reported Colorado schools have received NOTHING from the sales of marijuana as was promised. AND, more and more kids are being rushed to the ER's after eating marijuana packaged to look like pieces of candy or candy bars. Stoned parents, too zonked to keep track of their kids, don't notice them getting into Mom and Dad's stash.

Yeah, great idea that legalizing of pot. Take God out of the schools, out of society - replace Him with crap to keep you stoned and risk your own children's lives. We're making great progress, aren't we?

0

HwyRover 3 months, 3 weeks ago

Actually, you’re wrong, but we have become used to that. In Colorado the 2015 calendar year tax revenue from marijuana sales was just over $135 million. More than $35 million was reserved, specifically, for school construction with new roofs, boilers, and security upgrades for public schools being funded by the marijuana initiative. One local school district, Pueblo, has been using proceeds from their local marijuana tax to fund college scholarships for their residents. So obviously the little “news story” is totally false –or just the usual made-up trash we see here. And actual news stories report the use of marijuana by “kids” has decreased with the legalization.

As to abortion, it cannot be emphasized too many times that it is a legal medical procedure available to women to make a personal and private medical decision that does not – in any way – include busybodies interfering in their personal lives. Nasty old busybodies have been a bane for all time as they insist upon going about sticking their nasty noses in other people’s business. As always, when it comes to abortion – Don’t like abortion, don’t have an abortion. In ALL other cases mind your own business.

“It is also against the law to sell your body as in prostitution,” more incorrect trash. And as to “taking God out of the schools,” God had no place in our public schools and He has not been removed. The only restrictions have been put in place because of so-called “Christians” forcing their – at times – warped views of religion on everyone. What has taken place is that radicalized religious zealots have been controlled in our nation despite the Christian Taliban’s efforts to turn us into a theocracy.
