Remembering 'The Day'

Dick Waters (left), department commander of the American Legion and publisher of the Mohave County Miner at the time, receives from Seaborn Collins (right), past national commander of the American Legion, the battle flag of Admiral Kidd. Divers from the American Legion in Pearl Harbor had recovered the flag from the sunken hull of the battleship USS Arizona. The flag was presented to Waters at halftime at the ASU-BYU football game in 1952. Presently, the flag is in American Legion headquarters in Phoenix. On this date in 1941, Japanese forces bombed the U.S. fleet in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, killing more than 2,000 U.S. military personnel and sinking four battleships, including the USS Arizona.
