KINGMAN - Work on improvements to Bank Street is moving right along, but traffic may be slowing to a crawl on Gordon Drive next week.

The city will be closing Gordon from the center of Bank Street east to the intersection with North Evans Street. The street will be closed from 7 a.m. on Dec. 27 to 5 p.m. on Jan. 6.

The contractor, Desert Construction, Inc., will remove existing pavement and grade and install new pavement in the area during the closure.

A detour will route traffic onto surrounding roads, but the city Engineering Department suggests residents use other roadways to avoid delays. The speed limit in the area will still be posted at 25 mph.

The city scheduled the closure to coincide with the winter break of the Kingman Unified School District, said Debbie Casson, assistant city engineer. The idea was to minimize the inconvenience to parents dropping off children at school.

"We know it will still be disruptive to some people," Casson said.

Work on the project began in late August. Desert Construction will be widening North Bank Street from a two-lane street to five lanes between Airway Avenue and Gordon Drive and adding curbs, gutters, sidewalks and boulevard lighting.

The project is expected to be completed by mid-April. Improvements will also be made to 100 feet of roadway east and west of Bank along Stephens, Morrow, Pert, Kino and Coronado avenues and Gordon.
