A woman's place is outdoors
GOLDEN VALLEY - Melinda "Mindy" Pedigo is going on her third year in her own business, Mindy's Yard Maintenance. That's three years of pulling weeds, mowing lawns, getting rid of goat heads, planting and maintaining trees, shrubs and flowers, and bird- and rabbit-proofing gardens and fruit trees.
It's a lot of work, and Mindy loves every minute of it.
"I'm a very hard worker," she said. "I love working outdoors in the yards and gardens. I do the same kind of work for other people that I would do for myself."
She also installs watering systems, and she's in the process now of experimenting with a Canadian sod that is supposed to be drought- cold- and heat-resistant for this region.
"No job is too large, and no job is too small," Mindy said. "I offer senior discounts, and I love helping out the older folks that nobody else wants to deal with. It's instant gratification to see them so happy. I love making the older people smile, but I love the challenge of a major project, too.
"My business has reached the point where I need one more good, reliable employee," she said. "It's hard to find good employees. I'd like to hire another woman. I know this sounds a little sexist, but I've found women are usually more meticulous, and they like the work."
Mindy said she has about 30 customers in the Kingman, Golden Valley, Valle Vista and Bullhead City area.
"A lot of my work is fertilizing, aerating and getting weeds out of cement," she said. "I don't like to use a lot of poisons and chemicals. I prefer natural methods that are environmentally friendly."
