Reader defends position on foreign languages

To the editor:

In reference to the letter from Luca Zanna, Mohave County Minutemen, I did not use the phrase "illegal immigration" anywhere in my letter. I did not suggest that any business should hire "illegal aliens" from any country!

Although NOT a member of the Mohave County Minutemen, I have and still support their efforts to put a halt to hiring illegals and protecting our borders. Nothing in my letter addressed these issues.

"I do not agree with what you have to say, but I'll defend to the death your right to say it. " Voltaire

I was not contacted or asked my opinion of the "Papa John's Boycott" open-letter press release prior to it being issued.

I was unaware that the Mohave County Minutemen had usurped the U.S. Constitution's First Amendment, and that a clearance from them was required prior to voicing a concern about one of their press releases.

I gather from the tone of the first press release, and now Mr. Zana's reply, that it's okay to hire "illegal Canadians" because they speak English?

Is that right?

I have been working with Minutemen groups in various parts of this nation far longer than Mr. Zana has been a citizen. I don't recall any of those groups canceling free speech.

Maybe it's just a Mohave County thing.

My point was and still is that demanding only English be spoken in business is unrealistic, impractical, counter to a capitalistic approach to business, and is in fact racist.

I know, or hope, the local minutemen are not racists!

From June 2006 to June 2007, 10,753,830 non-resident tourists visited the United States and spent their money here. This figure does not include Canadian and Mexican tourists.

I'm sure that these visitors appreciated the efforts of American business to accommodate them with employees who could speak their native language.

Such efforts on business's part equates with greater profits, increased employment and betterment of the general economy. Business 101.

Suggestion: Keep focused on real issues. You do very good at that.

Keep up pressure on county government to at least endorse some kind of "check identity and citizenship" standards.

Work to elect the right kind of politician.

It doesn't have to be me. That's okay.

Your nominal contribution to the Alliance was much appreciated. I thought we said thank you.

Were we supposed to send out a news alert? The other 10 donors, who contributed more, didn't ask for notoriety.
