Ruth Helen Holgate, 88, of Kingman was called home to be with her Lord on Sunday, March 9, 2008. She was born Oct. 5, 1919, in Indianapolis to Otto and Bertha Jackson. They moved to Los Angeles when Ruth Helen was 2 years old into the house her father had built. There she graduated with honors from Garfield High School.
After touring the country with an all-women gospel sextet, "Jackie" met and married Byron "Barney" Holgate on Valentine's Day in 1948. They just celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary. Barney and Ruth have raised five children, Becky Lindberg (Jon) of Kingman; Steve Holgate (Mary) of Fredericksburg, Va.; Paul Holgate (Joyce) of Kingman; Dan Holgate (Linda) of Phoenix; and John Holgate (Landie) of Aurora, Colo. Their names live on in 14 grandchildren and their families as well: Jeanette Zimmerman, Alison Mecom, Anna Monarrez, Erik Lindberg, Tim Holgate, Christopher Holgate, Amy Wilson, Clayton Holgate, Katie DeRuiter, Mark Holgate, Andrew Holgate, Rachel Walter, Jeremiah Thurston-Holgate and Michael Thurston-Holgate. These families have given them 13 great-grandchildren to date, and four more are on the way: Asher and Jude Zimmerman; Charlie, Hailey and Aidan Mecom; Ethan and Ioni Monarrez; Alena and Scarlett Wilson; Pria DeRuiter; Gage Holgate; and Tristan and Mya Walter.
Ruth Helen welcomed all into her home, loving to cook for them. She was widely read and was an avid sports fan, knowing all the latest scores and the athletes by name in football, baseball, basketball, tennis, golf, figure skating and skiing. But she will be remembered most for her faith in Jesus Christ. He has been her strength and peace for almost all her life and carried her through these last years of decline. Her family and friends will miss her, but we know we will see her again, because Jesus is alive.
Visitation with the service immediately following was held on Saturday, March 15, at Sutton Memorial Funeral Home.
