Alice June Spear

Alice June Spear of Lafayette, Colo., passed peacefully at Hospice Care Center of Boulder on March 27, surrounded by her loved ones.

Alice was born on June 2, 1925, near Lotts Creek, Iowa, the daughter of Gustav Haack and Anna Meine-Haack. She attended country school in Lotts Creek.

She was united in marriage to William A. Spear, the love of her life, on Jan. 18, 1949. They were blessed with 10 children. Alice and Bill farmed in Iowa until 1969, when they purchased a motel in Boulder, Colo. After several other business adventures, they retired in Lafayette.

The center of Alice's life was her family, who she nurtured and cared for with love and affection. She enjoyed traveling and visiting friends and relatives, always sharing her easy laugh and home cooking to everyone's enjoyment.

Bill and Alice met at a dance, and their polka has delighted many audiences throughout the years. Alice earned her black-belt in shopping early in life, a passion she shared with her sisters, daughters and granddaughters, who could only hope to aspire to her legendary level of stamina.

After Alice met Bill, she embraced the Catholic religion. Their devotion to each other and their faith has guided them through life's triumphs and challenges.

She is survived by her husband, William; her children, Bonita (William) Vaske of Knoxville, Iowa, Rebecca (Charles) Peters of Wallingford, Iowa, Thomas Spear of Kingman, Mary (Jerome) Luine of Torrance, Calif., Lila (James) Harnan of Firestone, Colo., Joseph Spear of Louisville, Colo., Catherine (Dave) Henze of Lafayette and Rose (Jeff) Spear of Akron, Colo.; 22 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and two of here sisters, Edna Alt of Algona, Iowa, and Aldee (Robert) Campbell of Kingman.

She is now reunited with her parents; her twin sister, Agnes Hantelman; her sister, Louise "Toots" Hainzinger; and her brother, Walter Haack.

A visitation will take place Monday, March 31, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Darrell Howe Mortuary in Lafayette. The Rosary will be at 7 p.m. a Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, April 1, at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart of Mary Church in Boulder.
