Rexene Mertens, 89, of Kingman passed away Sunday, June 14, 2009, at home. She was born on Dec. 15,1920, in Brush, Colo., to Rex Edward Berkey and Vera Deal Berkey. She was married to Richard George Mertens on Oct. 8,1941, in Sterling, Colo. Richard passed away in July of 2008.
Rexene left Colorado to follow Richard's employment in the mining industry. Rexene traveled to South America and Africa with Richard's employment, then settled in Elsinore, Calif., in 1973, purchasing a campground. In 1977 they moved to Safford, Ariz., then on to Kingman, where they lived for over 30 years.
Rexene enjoyed camping with the Mohave Roaming Sams and traveling to Alaska, Mexico and most of the United States with their friends. Rexene always enjoyed watching her grandkids and great grandkids play sports. Richard and Rexene were involved for many years with the Kingman Elks Lodge, always at bingo until their health prevented them from attending.
Rexene is survived by her children, Vera and husband Jerry of Tucson, Betty and husband Barry of Kingman, Robert and wife Pat of Kingman; daughter-in-law, Laurie of Tucson; and sister-in-law, Adele of Colorado. She was preceded in death by her son, David; husband, Richard; her parents; two sisters, Monetta and Donalea; and two brothers, Rei and Richard.
Rexene leaves behind nine grandchildren, Kim and husband Alex, Suzi and husband David, Rod, Teri and husband Danny, Russell, Brianne and husband Chris, Leighjay and husband Scott, Robert Jr. and wife Stacey, and Lori and husband Chris. She also leaves behind 18 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
