Baby left in car now in CPS custody
KINGMAN - The parents of a 7-month-old infant were jailed this week for leaving their baby in the car while they shopped.
Jason Carl Vogt, 29, and Melissa Venna McElrath, 21, were arrested Thursday on charges of felony child abuse after a shopper spotted the baby crying in its car seat in the backseat of an unattended car in the Walmart parking lot around 1 p.m.
The windows of the sedan were rolled down, but the temperature inside the car exceeded 110 degrees, said Kingman Police Lt. Rusty Cooper.
The baby had an elevated body temperature and was taken to Kingman Regional Medical Center for treatment. He is now in the custody of Child Protective Services.
Officers rescued the baby from the car, then waited for the parents to return. It is believed that the infant was in the car for at least 20 minutes, since responding officers waited that long before Vogt and McElrath came out of the store.
They reportedly said they had forgotten that the baby was in the car.
