Obituary: Harold Dean Avants

Harold Dean Avants, 78, passed way at his home in Redlands, Calif., on Friday, Jan. 8, 2010. He was born July 13, 1931, in Dow, Okla., to the late Lynn and Lucille Avants. His family relocated to the Chloride/Kingman area in 1936 where he graduated from Mohave County Union High School. On Aug. 3, 1952, he married Charlene C. Ferguson in Chloride.

Harold served in the U.S. Army and was stationed at Fort Lewis, Wash. He and his family relocated to Riverside, Calif., in 1959 and lived in California since then. He worked for Johns Manville Fiberglass as a warehouse supervisor for several years and then became a Realtor and property manager in the La Sierra area in California. He also did beekeeping on the side just for fun.

Harold loved music, playing the piano and dancing. He also loved spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, often spending time driving kids to and from various sporting events, such as baseball, basketball, horse shows, ice skating and archery. He will be missed for his sense of humor and his love to tease and debate the opposite side of issues, just for the sake of the debate.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Dean; and brother, Charley. He is survived by his wife of 57 years; his children, Danise and husband Richard, Dennis and wife Teresa, and Dianna; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; his brother, Beecher; and sister, Nona.

The celebration of Harold's life will be held in Kingman on a date yet to be determined.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to VNA Hospice of Southern California, 412 Vanderbilt Way, San Bernardino, CA 92408.
