Obituary: Elsie Lee Starkey
On Sunday, Feb. 27, 2011, we sadly lost Elsie "Mom" Starkey when she went home to the Lord. Elsie was born on Jan. 21, 1924, in Keiser, Ark., to Pinklee and Ludie Grable.
Elsie was preceded in death by her husband, Hubert "Pop" Starkey; her parents; and six brothers. The Grables are once again together. Sadly, she saw the loss of her only son, Hubert "Bud" Starkey; and her youngest child, Diane Sanderson.
Elsie and Hubert moved to Kingman from California in 1970. She worked as a waitress at the Jade, City Café, and others for many years as she watched her family grow here.
Elsie was a one-of-a-kind person with a one-of-a-kind heart. She loved and cared for her family and friends more than anything else. She always made sure that everyone was okay and happy, and that explains why everyone called her "Mom."
Elsie is survived by her daughters, Loretta Conner of North Carolina and Pat Johnston of Kingman. She had seven grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Elsie had many friends and family who will miss her loving smile and personality, but most of all , we will miss being able to go and give her a hug and say, "I love you," because with a smile and a twinkle in her eyes she would reply, "I love you, Baby."
She will be missed dearly.
