Hail blamed for accidents, one death
KINGMAN - A micro-burst of hail is being blamed for five crashes, one fatal, that took place on a 2-½ mile stretch of Highway 68 Monday morning.
The accidents occurred between 11:06 a.m. and 11:38 a.m. on the west side of Union Pass when an inch of hail fell, said Robert Bailey, public information officer with the Department of Public Safety.
Bailey said one of the first accidents occurred when an adult male pulled off westbound Highway 68 at milepost 10 for an unknown reason and came to a stop on the shoulder. The man's Chevrolet Cavalier was struck in the driver's side door by a second vehicle, a Dodge pick-up truck driven by a 65-year-old Kingman resident, he said.
The man in Cavalier was killed. The driver of the truck was uninjured, but his wife, also 65, was transported with minor injuries to Western Regional Medical Center where she was treated and released.
The name and age of the driver in the first vehicle was unavailable Tuesday pending notification of next of kin.
A total of seven vehicles were involved in the five accidents. Only one other occupant was injured in the other accidents.
