Appeals process playing out for Lake Havasu man on death row
PHOENIX - A Lake Havasu City man scheduled to be executed for a 1987 double murder has one last hearing Thursday morning.
The Arizona Supreme Court denied a petition from Daniel Wayne Cook, 49, of Lake Havasu City on March 23 without an explanation. A Mohave County Superior Court Judge in January denied him a third request for post conviction relief based on information that he suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder.
The Arizona Board of Executive Clemency will now hear the case on whether to execute him.
Cook received the death penalty in August 1988 for beating, torturing and killing two men in Lake Havasu City in July 1987. The board will decide whether to commute his death sentence, grant a reprieve or proceed with the execution.
Cook is scheduled to be executed April 5. He is one of nine criminal defendants from Mohave County who are on Arizona's death row.
