Military Milestones: 70 Years of Service
World War II veterans Earl Hawthorne (left) and John "Jack" J. Thompson shake hands Thursday during a ceremony recognizing Thompson's 70 years as a member of the American Legion. Thompson served in the Navy on the USS Herndon and USS McNair. He and his wife Pauline later started a market in Dolan Springs. They eventually donated the building to the American Legion Post there, which Thompson helped start. He was awarded the American Legion "Certificate of Continuous Membership for 70 Years" inside his home. Hawthorne also served in the Navy, flying lighter-than-air (LTA) craft and was past department vice commander of the American Legion from 1985-86.
