Lightning strikes cause Internet havoc in Kingman, Golden Valley

Suddenlink and Frontier Communications' customers experienced significant Internet and telephone outages over the weekend in Kingman and the surrounding communities.

Sporadic lightning storms over the weekend kept some customers without service Monday.

Suddenlink Vice President of Corporate Communications Pete Abel said a utility pole just outside Kingman was struck by lightning Sunday around 8:30 p.m. It caused a fire and damage to multiple lines attached to the pole.

"Local Internet and phone services were disrupted by this incident, along with a few TV services, including the Phoenix TV stations and several high-definition channels, although the rest of the TV lineup continued to be available," Abel said.

Suddenlink got the OK from emergency crews - who responded to the fire - to start its restoration efforts around 11 p.m.

All Suddenlink services were restored by 4 a.m., Abel said. For people who continue to go without service, Abel suggested they turn off their modems, wait a minute and turn them back on. If that doesn't work, call Suddenlink's care center at (888) 822-5151.

Abel said weather-related outages have been a concern of the company's for quite some time.

"We are working to finalize and implement a plan that would protect and maintain services in the event of a similar future incident," Abel said. "We expect to have that work completed well before year's end."

Frontier Communications had a rough weekend, too, although how widespread its problems were remains unknown.

Technicians worked through the weekend and into the week to restore phone and Internet service to customers impacted by power outages ad storms passed through the area Friday, Saturday and Sunday, said Karen Miller, national region communications manager.

"Dial tone service is our priority, so customers can reach 911 services, if needed," Miller said.

Outages in Kingman, Golden Valley and Dolan Springs were caused by sporadic lightning strikes, she said.

The fiber optic equipment feeding the Dolan Springs community was struck by lightning Friday night, Miller said.

"Network cards were burned by lightning, causing the outages," she said.

Frontier crews replaced the cards and restored service to Dolan Springs by noon Saturday.

For parts of Golden Valley and Kingman, which may still be without service, Miller said, "Frontier crews will continue storm cleanup through the next few days."
