Mohave 911: Sunday, July 22, 2012

Mohave County Sheriff's Office is warning the public of an ongoing telephone scam, one in which a Desert Hills resident lost $2,000. The scam isn't new, but many people still become victimized. The 89-year-old grandmother received a call from her grandson needing money because he had been in an automobile accident in New Mexico. She said the caller sounded like her grandson and she sent $2,000 via Western Union to New Mexico. Later that day, the victim said that she kept thinking about the call and decided to contact the boy's mother. That's when she learned that her grandson was in Japan on a business trip and that the call had been a scam.

Deputies were given the receipt and the money transfer form and contacted a representative from Western Union. The representative said that the money had been picked up shortly after it was sent.

The Sheriff's Office advises residents to always confirm with family members before sending money. Also, be cautious when it comes to sending money via Western Union as transactions are extremely difficult to trace. If you suspect fraud, contact authorities.
