Obituary: Helen Hazelton

Helen Pauline Davies Hazelton passed away at age 82 on Thursday, Feb. 16, 2012. Pauline was born in Kansas City, Kan., to Roy Byrd Davies and Queene Alton Davies.

She is survived by her husband, Edgar David Hazelton of Avondale, Ariz.; and two daughters, Paula Kim Acer and Lesli Robb Hazelton. She loved her seven granddaughters and was active in their lives. They are: Sarah Michelle, Lindsey Anne, Cassie Leigh and Hillary Claire Acer, Leah Rachelle and Lauren Kristine Moore, and Morgan Amber Hazelton Tarango. Pauline is also survived by two brothers, Glen Davies of Ankeny, Iowa, and Walter "Lefty" Davies of Kansas City, Kan. Preceding her in death was Alton Davies, her younger brother and best friend.

She worked side by side with her husband, Ed, in "Hazelton Real Estate and Insurance" later adding tax preparation to the services they provided. Pauline was active in her community, serving on the Avondale Elementary School Board for 16 years and as president of the Board of Trustees for the Avondale Library for 20 years. Pauline was also a long-time member of Soroptimist and Business and Professional Women's Clubs.

She loved to travel, visiting many foreign countries and attending three Olympic Games. Reading was her passion. Bookshelves outnumbered seating areas in our home. Golf was her sport - she played often and was in many amateur tournaments, usually placing in her division, with three holes-in-one in her illustrious career.

She enjoyed Sunday breakfasts with her granddaughters where she shared advice and stories of her life. Most of all, she loved her family and will be missed by us all.

A small celebration of life was held for Helen Pauline on Sunday, Feb. 19, at Estrella Mountain Park where her family picnicked often. Her songs - Up, Up and Away In My Beautiful Balloon and It's A Wonderful World were playing as yellow balloons were released and all shared stories and love ... and celebrated a life well lived.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations be made to the Avondale Civic Public Library, 11350 West Civic Center Drive, Avondale, AZ 85323.
