Obituary: Sondra Jean Bailey-Henriksen-Taylor

Sondra Jean Bailey-Henriksen-Taylor, 79, passed away Tuesday, May 14, 2013, at Grangeville Health and Rehabilitation Center in Idaho.

Sondra, an only child, was born in Cleveland, Ohio, Jan. 19, 1934. Her father was in the National Park Service and was moved around to various parks. Sondra spent her early years in some of our nation's most beautiful surroundings. This cultivated in her a love for nature and animals that stayed with her throughout her life.

One of her favorite and most vivid memories to relate to her kids was when three or four adult grizzly bears were tearing into the garbage cans behind their cabin. Sondra's mom was so mad she grabbed a broom and rushed outside yelling and swatting at the bears, prompting them to run for the forest's edge nearby. Grandma continued chasing and swatting the rumps of the bears with the broom while Grandpa was running behind her yelling, "Katherine, get back here! Those are grizzlies!" Grandma had grit.

They returned to Ohio so she could attend school. They later moved to the Phoenix/Mesa area, where she graduated from high school. She married William J. "Bill" Bailey and settled in Mesa where their first two sons, Kelly and Barry, were born. The Baileys relocated to Kingman, where their daughter, Jeanne, and youngest son, Jim, were born. Sondra was married to Bill Bailey for nearly 35 years before divorcing.

She married Art Henriksen and they opened a small shop selling all gauges of model railroad trains and paraphernalia for some years.

After Art died, she married Richard Taylor, who in 2006 persuaded Sondra to sell her home (she had lived in Kingman for over 50 years) to finance their move to Kamiah, Idaho.

Sondra was preceded in death by her second son, Barry Duane Bailey. She is survived by her other children, William Kelly Bailey (Charlotte) of Houston; Jeanne Katherine Bailey-Clouse (Rick) of Phoenix; and James Dean Bailey (Linda) of Kingman. She has four grandchildren, Chelly Bailey Green (Jeremy) of Montgomery, Texas; Kacey Bailey Boyer (Ian) of Sulphur, La.; Jason Bailey (Alison) of Phoenix; and Catherine Scafedi-Valdez (Richard) of Phoenix. She also has 10 great-grandchildren.
