Women Making History: Kathleen Dodson-Long
KINGMAN - Whether it's operating the Dolan Springs Transit program or coordinating the Dolan Springs Community Council Christmas Day Dinner, Kathleen Dodson-Long is at home in her element.
The long-time Dolan Springs resident doesn't care whether she's transporting the elderly and disabled to a variety of appointments and activities or feeding turkey, ham and an assortment of trimmings and pies to more than 300 diners during the holidays. To her, it's all about being able to assist others.
"Even when she's not driving the van, Kathy is always available to help those in need, just a phone call away," said Patsy Jose, who nominated her for the Volunteerism category. "She should be among those honored because she has a positive impact on this community and those around Dolan Springs."
Dodson-Long took over the Dolan Springs Transit program as a volunteer when it was shut down years ago and built it back up, applying for small grants and sponsoring fund-raising activities. As owner and operator now, she has two paid drivers and runs a van herself when needed. She has increased the service area and routes, and offers field trips to improve the lives of her elderly and disabled passengers.
Dolan Springs Transit won the Outstanding Arizona Department of Transportation 5310 Program award for 2011.
Dodson-Long also is involved in the Dolan Springs Community Council and has assisted with the annual free community Christmas dinner for about five years.
