Pump bump ended Kingman car theft
Suspect flees after botched getaway ends where it started
KINGMAN - A Kingman man's New Year started off with a trip to the Mohave County Jail after he allegedly tried to steal a car from a woman, damaged a gas pump and was caught by a K9 officer.
Mohave County Sheriff's deputies arrested Darrion Reed Winso, 20, of Kingman, early Wednesday morning for felony robbery, theft of means of transportation and criminal damage.
At 2:20 a.m. Jan. 1, deputies and a Kingman Police officer were called to a reported robbery at a convenience store in the 3770 block of East Diagonal Way.
According to the MCSO, the caller told the dispatch officer that they saw a man pull a woman out of her truck when she stopped to get a newspaper. In his haste to leave with the stolen vehicle, the man backed into a gas pump. He then fled the scene on foot.
The woman reported that a man had pulled her out of her truck by her arm and her hair and then threw her to the ground. She refused medical treatment.
At 3 a.m., a man matching the description of the suspect was spotted by deputies walking on an abandoned property near Route 66 and Able Drive.
As deputies closed in on the man, he reportedly started to run north on Route 66. When a deputy warned the man, later identified as Winso, that the deputy would turn his law enforcement dog Radar loose, the man stopped. Deputies then took him in to custody. The victim identified Winso as the suspect, according to reports, and he was transported to the county jail.
The estimated damage to the gas pump is $15,000.
