Kingman Academy blanks Greyhills 17-0; 3 combine for no-hitter
KINGMAN - Quinn Garcia drove in five runs and Pryce Portillo four as the Kingman Academy High baseball team blasted Greyhills Academy in Tuba City Tuesday, 17-0. Garcia, Westin McCord and Lance Martin combined for the five-inning, 10-run rule no-hitter over the Fightin' Knights.
Kingman Academy (2-0 D-III, 6-0) belted out 14 hits in the game with all but two Tigers collecting a base knock.
The Tigers began methodically by scoring two runs in the first inning, one in the second and three in the third.
The game was put out of reach when the Tigers put up five runs in the fourth and six more in the fifth.
The Garcia, McCord and Martin trio allowed just two base runners - one reached on an error and the other was hit by a pitch.
McCord went 4-for-5 at the plate, stole three bases and scored three runs. Garcia doubled and Tarik Skubal and Portillo each had a triple.
On Saturday, Kingman Academy reached the championship game at the Bagdad Copper Classic after defeating the Sultans in the semifinals, 7-5. The Tigers were scheduled to face Wickenburg for the championship, but the game was postponed due to rain. The two teams are scheduled to meet March 28 in the regular season at Southside Park, and that game will also count as the championship game.
Kingman Academy plays today in the Kingman High School Baseball Classic. The Tigers face Havasu at 9:30 a.m. and River Valley at 1:30 p.m. at KHS.
River Valley 8, Kingman 2
River Valley used a four-run third inning to creep away from the Lady Bulldogs Tuesday in Mohave Valley, 8-2.
Natalie Borgens, Ali Finkbeiner and Rachel Arave each collected two hits for the Lady Bulldogs. Arave had Kingman's only run batted in.
Danni Lee went the distance for the Lady Bulldogs. She surrendered eight runs, four earned, on nine hits and two walks in six innings pitched. Lee struck out nine.
Kingman (0-1) hosted Kingman Academy (1-0) Wednesday. Results were not available by deadline. The Lady Bulldogs are scheduled to play in the Wickenburg tournament today through Saturday.
River Valley 15, Kingman 4
The Dust Devils belted out 14 hits, including two doubles and a home run, en route to their win over Kingman Tuesday at KHS, 15-4. Kingman (0-1) managed six hits in the loss.
The Bulldogs host the Kingman High Baseball Classic today through Saturday. Kingman plays Mohave at 9:30 a.m. and Havasu at 1:30 p.m. today.
The Kingman girls tennis team has dropped its first two matches of the season. The Lady Bulldogs lost to Flagstaff Feb. 26 at KHS, 6-3, and were upended by Mingus Monday in Cottonwood, 5-4.
The Kingman boys team hosted Mingus Tuesday and fell to the Marauders, 7-2.
