Kingman High's McCans ready to pull off the upset
KINGMAN - April showers not only bring May flowers, but they've brought Kingman High girls tennis player Cortney McCans some extra time to prepare for the No. 3 seed at the Division II state singles tournament.
McCans was scheduled to play Scottsdale Notre Dame Prep's Alexia Lombardi Saturday in the round of 16, but rain postponed the match until 12:30 p.m. Friday at the Paseo Racquet Center in Glendale. McCans had no problem with the delay.
"I was pretty excited. It gave me an extra week of practice," she said. "I was tired from playing all day Friday."
McCans opened the 64-player bracket Friday with two wins to advance. She's been taking advantage of the time the delay afforded her.
"Practice has been good," McCans said. "Yesterday (Tuesday) I hit with one of the boys and worked a lot on hitting to the backhand with topspin and getting back to basics."
Lombardi, who was seeded No. 5 a year ago, is a left-hander just like McCans. Though Lombardi possesses a high seed, McCans appears ready to grab the opportunity.
"I think I have a pretty good chance if I'm on my A-game," she said. "I need to come out hitting hard and confident."
A McCans win puts her into the quarterfinals at 5 p.m. Friday. The semifinals and championship matches are scheduled for Saturday.
