KINGMAN - The Bureau of Land Management is taking public comment on a proposal to extend a consolidated leach and waste rock stockpile at the Freeport McMorRan mine west of Bagdad in Yavapai County.
An open house meeting is scheduled from 5:30-7 p.m. today at Bagdad Community Campus, 700 Palo Verde, and Wednesday at Prescott Adult Center, 1280 E. Rosser St.
The proposed modification also contemplates installation of limited future distributed facilities south of the stockpile.
In addition, Arizona Public Service Company has submitted an amendment to an existing right of way for construction of access roads to maintain a 115-kilovolt power line.
The majority of Freeport McMorRan's copper mine in Bagdad is on private land. However, some mining operations are conducted on BLM land under a 1996 mine plan, including 671 acres previously approved for "disturbance."
Written comments may be mailed to the BLM field office at 2755 Mission Blvd., Kingman, AZ, 86401. Electronic comments may be submitted to email@example.com. Comments should be submitted by Nov. 4.
The purpose of the public "scoping period" is to determine issues that will influence the environmental analysis and guide the process for complying with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) of 1969.
