McCarthy simply hilarious in 'Spy'
From the writer/director of "Bridesmaids" - the movie that proved that women are actually funny - comes 'Spy,' a film which answers the time-old question: what would Jude Law sound like with an American accent? (Spoiler: Just as sexy as with a British accent).
Melissa McCarthy is hilarious as usual in this well-paced action flick, also starring Jason Statham ("The Transporter"), Jude Law ("Sherlock Holmes"), Allison Janney (TV's "The West Wing"), and Rose Byrne ("Bridesmaids").
Whether you're a fan of McCarthy or not, I can pretty much guarantee you'll laugh at this film, as both the cast and the script go all-out to get the most mirth out of every scene. What was most surprising for me was the amazing dynamic between McCarthy and Statham, wherein every scene they share the dialogue is unyielding in both its vulgarity and its hilarity. It's weird how these two actors, so seemingly mismatched, can jive so well together, but it really works.
What was also surprising was the amount of violence in the movie (not that I'm complaining), and not only in the action scenes, either. I expected the R-rating would mainly be for language (and it certainly doesn't disappoint in that department), so the gory death scenes came as kind of a surprise (as did the brief shots of male nudity - so definitely leave the kiddies at home for this one!).
I know many find McCarthy's brand of humor obnoxiously overbearing and/or too crude to be taken seriously, and while it's true she's not for everyone, in this viewer's opinion, her comedic talent in this film is flawless. She's not the shocking, over-the-top gross character you remember from "Bridesmaids," but nor is she by any means bland or toned-down. Her self-deprecation invites you to cheer her on through the character's tough emotional obstacles, as well as surprisingly well-done action sequences, and her persona blends perfectly with every other actor she shares a scene with.
The two hour runtime never drags in this hilarious action romp. I give it 3-1/2 out of 4 Miners.
