Brief power outage hits part of Kingman Sunday

KINGMAN - About 11,000 customers of UniSource Energy Services were without power for an hour and a half early Sunday morning due to equipment failure at the Hilltop substation on Hualapai Mountain Road.

Power went out at 4:45 a.m. Sunday and was back up around 6:22 a.m., said Bill DeJulio, senior director of electrical operations for UniSource.

The power outage affected residents in Rancho Santa Fe and Hualapai Foothill Estates, as well as the Kingman Airport and Industrial Park and areas around north Bank Street and Jagerson Avenue.

Protection equipment at the Hilltop substation recognized a failure in the transmission line and locked open a breaker, DeJulio explained.

UniSource workers went to the substation and made repairs to get the transmission line in service. They continued working Monday to take the faulty equipment out of service while it's being tested, rerouting transmission through a different line so that service will not be interrupted during the repair, DeJulio said.
