Dolan Springs hosting free Christmas dinner
DOLAN SPRINGS – Charlotte Kiffer and other volunteers from the Dolan Springs Community Council are preparing to feed 200 to 250 people at a free Christmas Day dinner.
The dinner will go from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., or until all the food is gone, at the Dolan Springs Community Council Hall, 15195 Pierce Ferry Road.
Santa Claus and his elves will visit from 1-2 p.m.
The community is invited to come for a delicious meal of turkey, ham and all the trimmings, spend time with family and neighbors and take a break from cleaning up.
“This is an important event,” said Kiffer, incoming president for the community council. “It’s not just for the needy. It’s for folks who don’t want to cook and want to meet with neighbors.”
Dolan Springs Community Council, a nonprofit group that has been in existence for 48 years, will also deliver Christmas dinner to shut-ins.
“These are people on fixed incomes,” Kiffer said. “I went on a delivery run a couple years ago, and I’ll tell you, it’s a very humbling experience. It was a cold Christmas that year and we pulled in front of a travel trailer and this guy came to the door with his American Legion hat and little dog and my heart just went out to him. This man served our country.”
Kiffer said she’s getting a lot of help from Thank-A-Vet, a nonprofit group that donated food items, put up fliers around town and arranged the visit from Santa Claus.
Kiffer, who moved to Dolan Springs from Las Vegas in 2009, said she’s amazed the community had the foresight to form the Dolan Springs Community Council.
“You get a lot of support, a lot of work,” she said. “We’ve been meeting for the last four months getting donations and coming up with a day-by-day plan to cook the turkeys and fix the dressing.”
