KINGMAN - Lee Williams blew past Joy Christian in the third quarter and captured the Division IV, Section III championship and automatic bid into the state tournament Saturday in Parker, 49-38.
The Volunteers (12-9) trailed at the half 22-18, but exploded for an 18-6 third quarter behind seven points each from Chaise Shropshire and Marco Antonio Narvarte to take a 36-28 advantage into the final eight minutes.
Shropshire led Lee Williams with 14 points and Narvarte finished with 13. Braxton Burgess scored 10, Giancarlo Narvarte added nine, and Nate Cottrell and Lawrence Campbell each had four.
The win catapulted the Vols up to the No. 11 seed for the state tournament, and they will face No. 22 Joy Christian (11-9) at 9 a.m. Friday in the Prescott Valley Event Center. After Saturday's win, Lee Williams is 1-1 versus the Eagles this season.
The Volunteers-Joy winner advances to the round of 16 to face No. 6 Queen Creek American Leadership (17-3) on Saturday at time and place to be determined.
