College roundup: Skubal sets school record with 13 strikeouts
KINGMAN - Sophomore Tarik Skubal (Kingman Academy, 2014) fanned 13 for Seattle University in the Redhawks' 4-1 win over Saint Mary's Sunday in Moraga, Calif. Skubal (1-0) pitched seven scoreless innings and gave up three hits and issued one walk.
The win prevented a four-game sweep by the Gaels and gave Seattle (1-3) its first win of the season.
The next day, Skubal was selected as one of the Louisville Slugger National Players of the Week by Collegiate Baseball.
Last season, Skubal was named as a Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American and Second Team All-Western Athletic Conference when he went 7-4 with a 3.24 earned run average.
Skubal continues to be Seattle's Sunday starter and is projected to face Bowling Green this week.
Cardiff 3rd for Southern Utah
Paige Cardiff (Kingman, 2013) finished in third place for Southern Utah University in the 800 meters at the Northern Arizona University Tune-up last Friday in Flagstaff.
Cardiff placed behind winner Maggie Carruth from NAU (2 minutes, 15.35 seconds) and Arizona State's Madison Davis (2:16.35) with a time of 2:17.88.
Cardiff is scheduled to race next at the Big Sky Indoor Championships that begin today in Bozeman, Mont.
Tribbet scores on floor
Sophomore Sidney Tribbet scored a 9.525 on the floor exercise for Hamline University (Minnesota) in the Pipers' (1-6) loss to Winona State last Friday, 186.175-183.250.
Tribbet competes at the Best of Minnesota meet Saturday at the University of Minnesota before going to the WIAC Championships/NCGA West Regionals next week in La Crosse, Wis.
