Desert Stars shine over Arizona
16U volleyball team claims championship
KINGMAN - Only in its second year of existence, the Desert Stars Kingman 16U club volleyball team took down Arizona and its 85 teams from across to state to capture the USA Volleyball Arizona Region Girls 16 Club Championship last Saturday in Phoenix.
The Desert Stars won six best-of-3 matches and didn't lose any. The Desert Stars only dropped one set, outscoring opponents 12-1.
Desert Stars are comprised of players from White Cliffs Middle School, Kingman Academy High School and Lee Williams High School.
Natalie Sanchez and Lorelei Fernandez are from WCMS.
Cierra Brown, Aspen Jackson and Isabella Anderson are from KAHS.
Ashley Sahawneh, Sadie Snay, Holly McFadyen and Tori Logan are from LWHS. The squad is coached by Sarah Casson and Traci Rosenbach.
"The girls really came together this weekend and were absolutely amazing," Casson said. "The girls came to play and put their hearts and souls into the day. I'm proud of all of them."
The Desert Stars beat teams from Phoenix, Flagstaff, Gilbert, Scottsdale and Queen Creek in winning the championship.
The tournament win qualifies the Desert Stars for nationals.
