Letter: Kingman needs a roller skating rink

The Sept. 29 KDM front page article, “Nothing to Do: Fact or Fiction,” deserves this heartfelt response. No, keep your shooting games in Phoenix where the gangs are! Any game weapons paraphernalia that looks so realistic that you are liable to get yourself shot by a cop while wielding it deserves for the user the very risk that weapons use carries.

If anyone in Kingman 12 years old and up is really interested in a career as a police officer, or in the military, they can apply for admission to the Kingman Police Explorer’s Program.

Here, the goal becomes one protecting the public, or our national interests, and not just to “take someone down” as the less-than-worthy goal of some of these video and other games and sports that occupy our youth.

Missing from the list of worthwhile activities mentioned in the article were 4-H programs teaching animal husbandry.

Also the community garden, where even the youngest can learn to pull weeds and plant things, for the reward of seeing nature’s bounty returned to them in the form of an essential survival element: food.

Kingman has not had a roller skating rink for about a generation now, and if anything needs to be added to the young people’s social landscape, it is this. You cannot use the splash pad in the cold winter months, and a warm social environment where kids and families alike can go and spend a happy winter’s evening together with friends. That is what is needed here.

Not more war games.

The elderly can always go and watch (… unless maybe there is some kind of a special wheelchair night?). And the young can improve their social skills and interactions right along with the attendant improvements in their physical balance and coordination.

This is what is really lacking and needed in Kingman, and it has been needed for a very long time.
