KINGMAN – Following a one-point loss to Mohave on Tuesday, Kingman High School girls basketball coach Tony Kern knew all the Lady Bulldogs needed to do was box out, rebound and do the little things. Kern focused on that in practice and it paid off Thursday night as Kingman picked up a 43-33 win over Kingman Academy at KHS.
“The girls really responded to the practice,” Kern said. “They really played a lot better. There are still kinks – some turnovers – but it’s nothing like it has been. They played a lot better. They really shined coming out of that practice compared to that last game.”
Sukwana Quasula led the Lady Bulldogs with a game-high 13 points, while Courtney Mossor scored 12 and Tarase Marshall finished with 10 points. Kingman (2-2) avenged a 51-46 loss to the Lady Tigers in the Nov. 20 season opener.
“It felt good, really good,” Quasula said. “We played a lot better. We were playing well together and moving the ball around. It was great.”
The Academy (1-3) did rally within two points, 30-28, early in the fourth quarter, but the Lady Bulldogs didn’t allow their rivals to inch any closer. Kingman pushed its lead to 37-30 with 3:28 remaining on a basket by Mossor and never looked back.
“We kept our heads and we took them on again,” Kern said. “It worked out. They showed a lot of maturity and confidence out there. I’m proud of them.”
The Lady Tigers, meanwhile, struggled to sink their free throws – finishing 2-for-18.
“We just didn’t execute,” said Academy head coach Garth Steed. “Once we started executing, free throws hurt us bad.”
Kiersten Edwards and Chloe Elliott led the Lady Tigers with eight points each, while Canya Thompson scored five.
“I thought our girls hustled well and that’s what I wanted them to do,” Steed said. “We just didn’t execute a few things down the stretch that really hurt us.”
The Academy and Lady Bulldogs travel to the River Valley Shootout Tournament today and Saturday.
