Lady Vols go 1-1 at Winter Classic

KINGMAN – The Lee Williams High School girls basketball team secured a win against Thunderbird High School, but lost to Campo Verde High School, during the first day of the Prescott Winter Classic on Monday, Dec. 20.

The Lady Vols got out to a quick start against Thunderbird to lead 19-11 after one quarter. Five Lady Vols put points on the scoreboard in the team’s most successful quarter of the season so far.

“We really got after it defensively right away,” said head coach Jerry Arave. “We forced a lot of turnovers and we were able to turn steals into points. It was a very good start for us.”

But three consecutive three-point buckets for Thunderbird at the start of the second quarter, as well as converted free throws, resulted in the Lee Williams’ lead being cut to just three points, 30-27, at the half.

The third quarter saw junior Brooke Hunter notch nine of her 16 points, with her efforts increasing the lead for the Lady Vols to 44-35 after three quarters. “We did a really good job finding Brooke underneath the basket and she was able to finish at the rim,” Arave said.

Junior Rebecca Arave put up six points in the fourth quarter alone to help secure the victory for the Lady Vols by a score of 52-42. Arave led Lee Williams on the scoreboard with 21 points, followed by Hunter with 16, senior Haley Smith with four, sophomore Chelsea Torrey with six and sophomore Taliyah Crook with five.

The team’s second matchup of the day was against 5A Campo Verde High School. The Lady Vols exhibited a strong defense in the first quarter, allowing just two points while scoring seven. The second quarter, however, saw Campo Verde add 20 points to the scoreboard while the Lady Vols again notched seven.

The Lady Vols’ offensive struggle continued in the second half, with only six points added to the scoreboard to Campo’s 11 in the third quarter. They were scoreless in the fourth quarter and lost 39-20.

Arave led the Lady Vols with 15 points, followed by junior Toria Gravell with five.
