The Purple Reign, a local AAU travel basketball team, won the championship of the high school division at the Masterpiece Tournament in Avondale last week. From left are assistant coach Tyler Skubal, Harley Bundy, Chelsea Torrey, Brooke Hunter, Rebecca Arave, Lia Lucero, Avery Pettway and head coach Rachel Skubal. After winning their first two games by wide margins, Purple Reign outlasted their opponents 28-24 in the semi-finals, as Lia Lucero of Lee Williams High School broke a tie in the final minute with a three-point shot. Lucero scored 10, Hunter led all scorers with 12 points, and Arave added six points. In the finals against Winslow, Arave scored 21 points and was named the tournament’s most valuable player as the Purple Reign scored a 49-47 win. Lucero added nine points and Hunter netted six. The squad hit four of six free throws down the stretch to seal the win after jumping out to a 10-point lead at halftime. The team is composed of players from Lee Williams and Kingman Academy of Learning high schools.
