Kingman Academy of Learning softball team on cusp of state crown

PHOENIX – The Kingman Academy of Learning High School girls softball team is just two wins away from a state championship. But top-seeded Benson awaits.

The Lady Tigers advanced to the Class 2A semifinals with a pair of lopsided wins last weekend, and were scheduled to play No. 1 seed Benson at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Rose Mofford softball complex in Phoenix. The game began after the Miner’s print deadline.

The victor will play the winner of the other semi-final matchup between No. 2 Round Valley and No. 6 Wilcox in the championship game at 5:30 p.m. Friday at the Farrington Softball Stadium on the Arizona State University campus.

The Lady Tigers entered the tournament ranked 5th in the state, and knocked off No. 4 Santa Cruz Valley (13-2) by a score of 8-3 on Saturday, May 7 in the quarterfinals.

Kingman Academy had advanced with a 7-0 whitewashing of No. 12 St. Johns (9-9) in the opening round on Friday, May 6.

The Lady Tigers are 13-3 overall under head coach Anette McCord. They’ve won 11 consecutive games in a streak that began on April 1.

Benson is 15-1 and has won five straight games.
