Jimmy S. Vance

Jimmy S. Vance of Phoenix, a retired public educator and former superintendent of Mohave County High School District, died Feb. 11, 2023.

He was born in Owensboro, Kentucky to Homer and Fannie Mohon Vance. He was a disabled Korean War veteran, who was honorably retired from the Army in 1956

He graduated from Chrisney High School 1951, the University of Arizona (BA 1960, MA 1962) and Arizona State University (EdD, 1972).

He was predeceased by his parents, Homer and Fannie Vance; brothers Hubert, Rex and S.J.; sisters Eleanor, Chlorine, and Daisy; and his wife Delores M. Long (married for 62 years).

Survivors include his son, Rex, and daughter, Maureen W. Valdez, both of Arizona; sister Anna, six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and many nieces, grandnieces, nephews and grandnephews located throughout the U.S.

Jimmy retired in his late fifties and spent much of his retirement traveling extensively with his wife Delores and spending time with family. Although he lived in Arizona for the majority of his life, he maintained close ties with family members and his former classmates in Indiana and Kentucky.
