2017 Andy Devine Days Rodeo

KINGMAN – The wind died down enough for the Mohave County Fairgrounds not to be completely swirled in dust for the second half of the 33rd Annual Andy Devine Days Rodeo Sunday. Local community organization The Kingsmen helped make the event a blast for thousands of rodeo fans and competitors on both Saturday night and Sunday afternoon. During opening ceremonies, rodeo announcer Bob Edmonds addressed the crowd and scoffed at the increasing number of NFL players who have been taking a knee during the national anthem. He firmly stated that at the rodeo, everybody stands – to which the crowd erupted in cheer. After a prayer, country singer Shari Rowe, who played at the 100 Club VIP party the night before, belted out ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’ loud enough to be practically heard across town. Some local veterans were honored for their service. Dalace Beiswenger was crowned 2018 Rodeo Queen and Angela Bernal 2018 Teen Queen. After the pomp and circumstance, the roping, racing and riding began. Nearly $24,000 in prize payoffs were awarded and the following rodeo contestants took first in their respective categories: Kyle Charley of Lukachukai, Arizona for Bareback Riding; Alex Wright of Milford, Utah for Saddle Bronc Riding; Rylan Wright of Heber City, Utah for Bull Riding; Tim Roberson of Marana, Arizona for Steer Wrestling; Taylor Santos of Creston, California for Tie Down Roping; Aaron Tsinigine of Tuba City and Ty Romo of Whiteriver, Arizona for Team Roping; Sherry Cervi of Marana for Barrel Racing and Taylor Nichols and Kaylie Atchley (no addresses listed) for Junior Barrel Racing. KINGMAN – The Downtown Historic District was jam-packed Friday evening and most of Saturday for the Andy Devine Days celebration. Most of the action was on Beale and Fourth streets. The festivities really kicked off with the Tractor Supply Company’s Human Strength Tractor Pull staged between Black Bridge Brewery and Floyd’s and Company Real Pit BBQ. The Jonathan Lee Band put on a concert worthy of a national headliner between Rickety Cricket and The Farmhouse. Just about any downtown business that was open was filled with curious and paying customers and the UniSource Energy Vendor Row arts, crafts and food would satisfy anyone from early Christmas shoppers to someone on drugs. Saturday’s Andy Devine Days Parade had 73 entrees and lasted a solid hour and a half. Beale Street was crawling with families enjoying food, beverages, mechanical bull rides and bungee jumping. The Miners Mineral Monument was officially dedicated and sealed, with time capsules and photos of those involved in the project placed inside. The cool autumn weather hit the spot and everyone seemed to have a blast before the frigid winds of fall and winter blow through.
